Making the Switch: A Journey from Lithium to Ni-MH

As someone living with LADA Diabetes (Treated like Type 1 Diabetes), managing my condition effectively is crucial. An integral part of this management is ensuring that my Medtronic Minimed 780G Insulin Pump is always powered and functional. Over the years, my journey with batteries has evolved, leading me to the Panasonic Eneloop Pro AA Ni-MH Rechargeable Batteries. In this post, I’ll share my experiences and insights, hopefully guiding you to a choice that suits your needs.

Previous Experience: Energizer AA Ultimate Lithium Batteries

Three years ago, on my previous blog post at LADA Diabetes, I discussed my usage of Energizer AA Ultimate Lithium Batteries. They were reliable for both the 670G and the 780G models of the Medtronic Minimed pump. However, these lithium batteries have become either hard to find or more expensive recently. This change prompted my search for an alternative.

Discovering Panasonic Eneloop Pro Ni-MH Batteries

My quest led me to the Panasonic eneloop pro AA batteries. The 780G pump accepts Lithium, Alkaline, or Ni-MH batteries, giving me the flexibility to experiment. With sustainability in mind, I opted for these rechargeable Ni-MH batteries.

Battery Life Span Comparison

  • Energizer AA Ultimate Lithium Batteries: Lasted 1 month
  • Panasonic Eneloop Pro Ni-MH Batteries: Lasted 14 days (2 weeks)

While the lithium batteries had a longer lifespan, the Panasonic batteries proved to be a more affordable and environmentally friendly option.

First Impressions, and a Precaution!

One caveat I encountered was that these batteries were not pre-charged, contrary to the advertisement. The insulin pump would not accept the battery until I charged it.


If you take out a battery with low power, you need to have a fully charged battery on hand. Putting the low powered battery back in the pump may not work. I suggest having an alkaline battery available too as a back up. Also, a note for fellow U.S. insulin pumpers — I find that a dime is the perfectly sized coin for opening up the battery compartment.

Why I Recommend Panasonic Eneloop Pro Batteries

Despite the initial hiccup, my overall experience with the Panasonic Eneloop Pro AA Batteries has been positive. They last two weeks and recharge quickly, making them a practical choice for my lifestyle. The affordability factor, combined with their rechargeable nature, makes them an environmentally responsible choice.
