Living with diabetes involves navigating a complex web of health challenges, not least of which is the significantly heightened risk of gum disease. Despite diligent management of blood sugar levels, those of us with diabetes remain particularly susceptible to oral health issues like gingivitis and periodontitis.

The systemic inflammation from periodontitis releases inflammatory mediators like cytokines, known to impair insulin sensitivity. My Personal Journey: Finding the Missing Piece
Despite a robust oral hygiene routine, my journey was initially marked by frustration. Partial successes with brushing, flossing, and mouthwash routines brought some improvement but didn’t fully address my gum disease. My dentist recommended an electric toothbrush. This toothbrush has a small head which matches my small mouth and the floss action head contains bristles that loosen plaque between teeth.
#2. Double Flossing
I floss with both regular glide floss tape and with a waterpik. For the floss tape, I make sure to wiggle it between each tooth, so that it really gets in between the teeth well. Afterwards, I use the waterpik to remove food particles still caught in hard to reach spaces. If you have tight teeth that are difficult to floss between, a waterpik may be especially helpful.
#3. Aloe Vera Mouthwash
I use the Natural Dentist Healthy Gums Antigingivitis/Antiplaque rinse which is alcohol free and contains 20% Aloe Vera. It makes a noticeable difference. I try to rinse for a full 60 seconds — double the recommended time.
#4. UV-C Toothbrush Sanitizing
As already mentioned, this was the missing piece. I was doing ALL of the above, which did help A LOT, but I was still having occasional bleeding gums and gums that looked infected. I thought that there must be a solution. After much research, I realized that the connection was bacterial load and decided to try sanitizing my toothbrush. This indeed was the missing step. I don’t know why it’s deemed “ok” to just use a toothbrush that hasn’t been sanitized. I bought the Bril UV-C Toothbrush Sanitizer and it’s making the difference.
Professional Cleanings: An Integral Component
This blueprint is not a replacement for professional cleanings. My dentist recommends a professional cleaning every 3 months. A professional cleaning can address tartar buildup and areas difficult to manage independently.
